Two Outgoing Senators Did What Democrats Could Not
Todd Blanche should already be America's confirmed attorney general.
He rose from paralegal to federal prosecutor to Trump's own defense lawyer.
He has run the Justice Department as acting attorney general for months without a single scandal to his name.
None of that mattered Wednesday night.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley pulled Thursday's committee vote off the calendar because two Republicans refused to back Blanche.
Sen. John Cornyn of Texas and Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina are both gone after this term.
Cornyn lost his primary this year after Trump backed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton instead.
Tillis announced he was done seeking reelection after breaking with Trump over Medicaid cuts.
Neither man answers to Republican voters again.
Senate Democrats spent this entire year filibustering Trump's nominees, and Republican leadership branded it Trump Derangement Syndrome from the Senate floor.
It took two Republicans, not one Democrat, to actually stop a Trump attorney general.
The fight is over language in the Justice Department's settlement of Trump's ten billion dollar lawsuit against the IRS.
A contractor named Charles Littlejohn stole Trump's confidential tax returns and leaked them to the press while Trump ran for reelection.
Littlejohn pleaded guilty to the theft and was sentenced to five years.
The agency responsible for protecting that very data never lifted a finger to stop him.
Blanche's settlement shut down existing audits tied to returns filed before the deal closed in May.
Cornyn wants it rewritten to spell out that future filings stay fair game.
The Justice Department already killed the settlement's most radioactive piece, a 1.776 billion dollar weaponization fund that outraged senators in both parties.
That should have ended it.
Cornyn told Fox News the department has not delivered the written language he demanded.
"We need to conform the actual document to what Todd Blanche testified under oath."
Tillis went further and admitted there is no real dispute left to fight over.
"I really do believe it's just a drafting exercise."

A sitting Republican senator just confirmed he blocked his own party's attorney general nominee over paperwork.
Cornyn's Grudge Started the Moment Trump Endorsed Ken Paxton
Trump did not let the moment pass quietly.
Asked about the holdup, he wondered aloud whether Cornyn was settling a score.
"Maybe John Cornyn is upset with me because I didn't endorse him."
Cornyn shot back that Trump's theory was convenient but false.
Convenient or not, the timeline speaks for itself.
That grudge is now the single biggest obstacle standing between Trump and his own Justice Department.
Tillis carries his own grudge from last year's Medicaid fight, and he is just as immovable.
Trump posted the real scoreboard himself on Truth Social.
He wrote that Cornyn and Tillis had their political careers ended by his refusal to endorse them.
He is not wrong, and he is not backing down either.
Trump floated pulling Blanche's name entirely and resubmitting it the moment Cornyn and Tillis clear out of the building in January.
That is a real gamble, because Democrats are pouring money into both open Senate seats hoping to flip them blue.
A weaker Republican majority could make confirming Blanche even harder than it is right now.
Two senators who no longer need Republican votes are betting Trump blinks first.
Grassley should put Blanche back on the calendar and force Cornyn and Tillis to vote in public before they walk out the door for good.
If they want to sink a qualified nominee over a paperwork fight with their own party, their names belong on the record.
