A sledgehammer came down on a Marine's head at the Iwo Jima memorial outside Quantico.
Police had the suspect in handcuffs within minutes, but the deeper story was still sitting in a federal database.
Federal sources say the reason he was still here at all will make you furious.
Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano Entered Illegally in 1999 Before Getting DACA Protection Twice
Prince William County Police found Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano still mid-swing when they arrived at the limestone replica of the Marine Corps War Memorial on the night of October 21.
He had already knocked the head off one of the six bronze-toned figures raising the flag on Mount Suribachi.
Police estimate the damage in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Officers charged him with felony destruction of property.
They added trespassing with intent to damage property.
They topped it off with felony injury to a monument.
A judge is holding him without bond.
Federal sources told Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin that Maldonado Soriano entered the United States illegally from Mexico in December 1999.
The Obama administration granted him Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status in 2014.
The Biden administration renewed it again in 2024.
The Trump administration finally let it lapse in August.
Two months later he was standing at Quantico with that same sledgehammer.
DACA 'Dreamer' Protection Expired in August and the Sledgehammer Came Out By October
DACA was never a green card, and it was never citizenship.
It was a renewable permission slip Obama invented by executive order in 2012, promising not to deport certain people who arrived as children.
Every two years the slip had to be renewed – and for over a decade, the federal government kept renewing it for Maldonado Soriano without ever pushing him toward actual legal status.
That is the mechanism nobody on the left wants to explain.
That was never real protection.
It was a piece of paper Washington kept photocopying every two years instead of ever making a decision.
Two administrations kept stamping it, and when the stamping finally stopped, the man had nothing left to lose.
The Department of Homeland Security posted a photo of the damaged memorial with a four-word message: "This we will defend."
White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers did not pull a single punch.
"This criminal illegal alien's dream is over: Maldonado Soriano disrespected our brave service members," Rogers said.
She added that President Trump "has secured our border and is deporting illegal criminals who hate our country and our values."
The Marine Corps confirmed it is running a joint investigation with Prince William County Police and declined further comment while charges are pending.
A French foundry has already offered to restore the statue for free.
The Sacrifice Behind the Iwo Jima Statue He Took a Sledgehammer To
The real insult goes past the hundreds of thousands of dollars in broken limestone and bronze.
Three of the six Marines depicted on that statue represent men who died raising that flag on Iwo Jima.
The actual battle killed 6,821 Americans and wounded 19,000 more over thirty-six days.
An illegal alien just took a sledgehammer to that sacrifice, and he only got the chance because Obama handed him a renewable pass in 2014 and Biden kept stamping it through 2024.
This is not an isolated case.
It is what happens when a program built to be temporary gets treated as permanent for a decade by two administrations that cared more about optics than removal.
Trump's Department of Homeland Security finally closed the loophole, and the first thing that happened once the protection ran out was a sledgehammer at a Marine memorial.
That is not coincidence.
Democrats defended these renewals for a decade and called it compassion, and a decapitated Marine statue is what that compassion actually produced.
