Democrats spent years screaming that gerrymandering was destroying democracy.
Now they're the ones who sacrificed everything to draw the districts they wanted – and it just blew up in their faces.
Ben Domenech went on Fox News and explained exactly where that leaves Democrats ahead of fall voting in the 2026 Midterm, and it's worse than they're letting on.
Democrats Drew the Maps and Trapped Themselves
Democrats made a calculated bet heading into the 2026 midterms.
They looked at the redistricting landscape and decided to go all-in – aggressive map-drawing in state after state, convinced that locking up favorable districts would hand them the House majority they've been desperate to reclaim since 2022.
Fox News contributor Ben Domenech laid it out plainly.
"Democrats this cycle thought they should lean into it because it would give them an advantage going into the midterms," Domenech said Sunday.
Then the courts stepped in.
The Virginia Supreme Court threw out Democratic maps engineered to pad their margins.
The U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on the Voting Rights Act reshuffled the redistricting math Democrats had built their strategy around across multiple states.
Now Domenech says Democrats are staring at a question they never expected to be asking: "Did we make a miscalculation here? And are we now going to have to effectively run the table with all of our swing districts in order to take back the House?"

The Math That Has Nancy Pelosi Sweating
Running the table on swing districts is not a strategy.
It's a Hail Mary.
Historical midterm trends have almost always favored the party out of power – the playbook Democrats were counting on to drift back into the majority without having to earn it district by district.
They built their entire 2026 House strategy around banking safe seats through gerrymandering, then picking off a handful of competitive races.
That plan is gone.
Every marginal district they drew to be safe is now a district they have to actively defend.
Every swing seat they assumed they'd be fighting for is now a swing seat they genuinely have to win – with no margin for error anywhere on the map.
Domenech called it exactly what it is: "An astonishing place to be given the historical trends."
The party that needs a perfect midterm cycle to win a chamber they expected to take back easily is the party that played itself.
They Said Gerrymandering Was a Threat to Democracy
Democrats spent the better part of a decade making gerrymandering a moral issue.
They ran ads about it.
They held press conferences about it.
Stacey Abrams built an entire career around it.
The argument was always that Republican map-drawing was corrupt, anti-democratic, and an existential threat to fair elections.
Then Democrats got their hands on the pen – and drew the most aggressive maps they could.
Now the courts are throwing those maps out, and Democrats are standing in the rubble of their own strategy.
Domenech didn't need a focus group to see what happened.
Democrats announced their own strategy publicly, watched the courts dismantle it, and are now facing a map of their own making that punishes every mistake.
They burned their credibility and their margins at the same time – and Ben Domenech just made sure every conservative in America knows it.
