French rioters burned city halls for weeks while Macron just watched and tweeted warnings.
That same anarchist playbook landed in Italy this weekend, and it got ugly fast.
Giorgia Meloni just tore into rioters who brought weapons nobody expected to a protest supposedly about wages.
Rioters Brought Cobblestones and Hammers to a Labor Protest
Saturday's demonstrations in Milan, Turin and Bologna were billed as a protest over the cost of living.
Within hours they turned into a coordinated assault on Italian police.
In Turin, officers stopped people carrying cobblestones and window-breaking hammers – not signs, not banners, tools built for one purpose.
In Milan, rioters smashed their way through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, one of Italy's most famous 19th-century arcades, and looted the stores inside.
Police had to fire water cannons in front of Milan's own cathedral to break up the mob.
Fifty people were detained, some of them minors.
In Bologna it was worse.
Fifty-six police officers were injured there, according to the police union, and the chaos forced authorities to shut down the city's train station.
In Turin, around 100 officers were hurt and roughly 30 people were arrested.
Meloni did not hide behind diplomatic language the way Western leaders usually do when the mob wears the right politics.
"Once again, the women and men of the Law Enforcement Forces have had to face the violence of criminals who, even through organized groups, exploit demonstrations to seek confrontation and sow chaos," she wrote.
She called them what they are.
"Gangs of thugs," she said – not activists, not demonstrators, thugs.
Even Milan's center-left mayor admitted the violence against police and the damage to his own city "are not justifiable."
When a Democrat-style mayor in a European capital won't defend the rioters, that tells you everything about how indefensible this was.
This Is the Same Script Europe's Far Left Has Been Running All Year
Italy didn't invent this.
France spent weeks under siege from masked rioters torching city halls, and Macron spent that same stretch warning the unrest was being "exploited" rather than actually stopping it.
Now the same tactics have jumped the border into Italy, organized under the banner of CGIL, Italy's largest labor union and a group with a long history of ties to the Italian left.
A peaceful rally over wages does not require hammers.
It does not require cobblestones staged in advance.
It requires organization, and organization means somebody planned this before a single protester showed up.
This is not the first time Meloni has had to say it out loud either.
Back in February, anti-Olympics rioters tore through Milan, and Meloni branded them "enemies of Italy" after the violence.
Eight months later, nothing has changed except the excuse on the protest sign.
Why Brussels and Washington Should Be Paying Attention
Here's what fires me up about this story: every time it happens, the same people who lecture America about "political violence" go silent the second the mob is on their own side of the aisle.
Nobody in the legacy press is calling Bologna an insurrection.
Nobody is demanding to know who funded the hammers that showed up in Turin.
If a crowd of Trump supporters had been caught stockpiling tools to break windows before a rally, it would be the lead story on every network for a month.
When it's masked men hurling stones at Italian cops defending a cathedral, it's filed under "protest."
Nobody needs a sledgehammer to complain about rent.
A sign works fine for that.
The moment the signs turn into cobblestones, it stops being a labor protest and becomes exactly what Meloni called it: an organized attack on civil order.
Meloni is one of the only major European leaders willing to call the mob a mob instead of dressing it up as grassroots outrage.
That's why she keeps winning elections while leaders like Macron keep losing control of their own streets.
