He's a U.S. Forest Service smokejumper, a union leader, and he wants voters to know it.
Forstag brands himself as a plainspoken tradesman fed up with Washington and rising rents in Missoula.
He's challenging Republican Rep. Ryan Zinke with the backing of Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The two socialist stars have rallied crowds for him and lent him their national fundraising machine.
Forstag wasn't even born in Montana, he was born in Ohio and raised in Portland, Oregon.
He grew up attending a private Jesuit high school before moving to Missoula for college.
Forstag spent years as a student senator at the University of Montana before he ever touched a chainsaw professionally.
His ACLU Lobbying Record Tells Montana Voters a Different Story
Before he picked up a chainsaw for the cameras, Forstag spent years as a paid lobbyist.
He worked the Montana Capitol for the ACLU, for Planned Parenthood, and for the city of Missoula.
He fought a proposed ban on gender-transition procedures and medications for minors.
Records show he also fought against a bill requiring student athletes to compete based on biological sex.
He opposed a measure tightening voter ID protocols in the state of Montana.
Forstag testified against a bill restricting local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, calling it fear-mongering.
"I believe the government's got no place getting involved in peoples' private, personal decisions," Forstag said.
The National Republican Congressional Committee says Forstag would be "a rubber stamp for the socialist wing" of his party.
None of that stopped Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez from throwing their weight behind him anyway.

The Press Bought the Costume Before Anyone Checked the Paperwork
Ocasio-Cortez told a rally crowd, "When something is burning in this state, Sam runs towards the fire."
That's a great line for a stump speech and a terrible summary of his actual résumé.
Outside coverage of his primary win described him only as a firefighter and a labor man, full stop.
A glossy Esquire profile went even further, framing his decision to run around one emotional night alone by a lake.
The write-up buried his years advocating for the ACLU deep in the piece and steered clear of the word lobbyist entirely.
His "union" credential turns out to be a leadership post in a federal employees union, not a hard-hat trade local.
Readers got the tears and the wildfires and almost none of his testimony to lawmakers in Helena.
The Playbook Never Changes, Only the Costume Does
You'd think Platner's collapse would be the moment the party finally learned to check a résumé before falling in love.
Instead they're running the identical trick in Montana with a smokejumper standing in for the oysterman.
The formula never changes: find someone who looks like he swings a hammer, then bury the activist résumé underneath.
Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez didn't vet Forstag any harder than Sanders vetted Platner, they just liked the flannel.
Montana voters deserve to know their "working class" candidate spent years lobbying against the same common-sense laws Republicans in Helena were trying to pass.
Ryan Zinke doesn't have to invent a single attack ad, he just has to read Forstag's own lobbying disclosures out loud.
This is the same recycled con Democrats ran with John Kerry's duck hunting photo op and Elizabeth Warren's fake tribal card, just with a parachute this time.
Montana Republicans should be thanking Graham Platner, he handed them the exact script they need to take apart Sam Forstag line by line.
