John Thune just insulted every conservative in America who wants fair elections.
The Senate Majority Leader didn't call them concerned citizens.
He dismissed tens of millions of Americans demanding the SAVE America Act as nothing more than a "paid influencer ecosystem."
Mike Lee Fired Back in Real Time
Sen. Mike Lee went straight to the American people with a message that cut through the establishment spin.
"Over the last few months, tens of millions of Americans have jumped on the cause of supporting the SAVE America Act and using the talking filibuster to advance it," Lee said.
He didn't stop there.
"I regret that some in Washington tonight are dismissing all those who feel this way – and who have weighed in – as somehow 'paid influencers' or the product of paid influencers. This is wrong."
Then Lee turned it around and asked two questions that stopped Thune's argument cold.
Do you support using the talking filibuster to advance the SAVE America Act?
If so, are you a "paid influencer"?
He already knew the answer.
What Thune Is Actually Protecting
This is the same bill Trump has made his number-one legislative priority.
The SAVE America Act would require photo ID and documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.
The House already passed it on February 11, 2026.
Trump has been unambiguous: he will not sign any other legislation until it reaches his desk.
"I'm not going to sign anything until this is approved," Trump told House Republicans, warning that passing the act would "guarantee the midterms."
Thune co-sponsors the bill and claims to support it.
Then he turns around and tells reporters a talking filibuster is "much more complicated and risky than people are assuming" – and refuses to bring it to a vote.
Sen. Josh Hawley has said he supports the talking filibuster and is willing to do whatever it takes to pass the bill.
Thune controls the floor and won't act.
The Pattern Washington Doesn't Want to Admit
This is not the first time an election integrity fight has been left to die quietly in the Senate.
The original SAVE Act passed the House in April 2025 and never moved in the Senate.
Now a stronger version has cleared the House – and Thune is already signaling the same outcome.
Sen. Josh Brecheen warned this week that the SAVE America Act is "currently dying a slow death in the Senate," adding that "every day this legislation is delayed is another day that the integrity of American elections is put at stake."
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt made clear the White House position hasn't moved: Trump is "very much continuing to focus on the passage of the SAVE Act."
The grassroots pressure campaign has already produced results.
Sen. John Cornyn, running the toughest primary of his career, announced support for the talking filibuster after weeks of constituent pressure.
That's not astroturf.
That's voters doing exactly what Americans are supposed to do.
Thune Has No More Excuses
Proof of citizenship to vote polls at roughly 80 percent with the American public.
Democrats have already declared their position – Chuck Schumer announced "total gridlock" before the bill even reached a Senate vote.
That means Republicans have one job: hold the line, force the issue, and let Democrats explain to the country why they think election rolls don't need to be verified.
Instead, Thune is telling the people demanding action that their concern is manufactured.
He's telling Mike Lee the movement he's built for months is a social media illusion.
He's telling Trump that the voters who elected him are an echo chamber.
The men and women calling their senators, organizing locally, and showing up for election integrity are real Americans.
John Thune works for them.
It's time he started acting like it.
