Macaulay Culkin Said Four Words About Catherine O’Hara That Left Hollywood In Tears

Hollywood lost one of its most beloved stars when Catherine O'Hara died suddenly at 71.

The Schitt's Creek icon passed away Friday morning after paramedics rushed her to a Los Angeles hospital in serious condition.

And Macaulay Culkin said four words about Catherine O'Hara that left Hollywood in tears.

Culkin Posts Heartbreaking Tribute To His "Home Alone" Mom

Macaulay Culkin took to Instagram Friday with a tribute that captured what millions of fans felt about losing Catherine O'Hara.

The 45-year-old former child star shared two photos side-by-side.

The first showed young Culkin being embraced by O'Hara in the original Home Alone film.

The second captured the same embrace decades later at Culkin's 2023 Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony where O'Hara delivered a tearful speech honoring her on-screen son.

"Mama. I thought we had time," Culkin wrote.

Those four words hit harder than any lengthy statement could.

"I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much more to say. I love you. I'll see you later," he added.

The relationship between Culkin and O'Hara transcended typical Hollywood co-star connections.

During a 2024 Home Alone screening, Culkin revealed that whenever he saw O'Hara, he called her "mom" and she would open her arms wide and respond "Son."

O'Hara's Walk of Fame Speech Became Her Final Public Tribute

O'Hara's December 2023 Walk of Fame appearance brought both stars to tears.

"Thank you for including me, your fake mom who left you home alone not once, but twice, to share in this happy occasion. I'm so proud of you," O'Hara said.

She praised Culkin's performance as Kevin McCallister as the reason "Home Alone was, is, and always will be a global sensation."

"He had a most excellent script and a wonderful director. But it is Macaulay's perfect performance as Kevin McCallister that gave us that little every boy on an extraordinary adventure," O'Hara said.

She credited Culkin's survival of childhood fame to one quality director John Hughes recognized in him.

"Your sense of humor. It's a sign of intelligence in a child, and a key to surviving life at any age," O'Hara explained.

That speech became even more poignant when O'Hara died just 14 months later.

Hollywood Mourns Loss Of Comedy Legend

Paramedics responded to O'Hara's Brentwood home at 4:48 a.m. Friday after she had difficulty breathing according to the 911 call.

O'Hara's agency CAA confirmed her death came "following a brief illness" though her cause of death remains unclear.

The Emmy-winning actress leaves behind her husband, production designer Bo Welch, and their two sons Matthew and Luke.

O'Hara's career spanned five decades from her breakthrough on SCTV in the 1970s through recent acclaimed performances in The Studio and The Last of Us.

She won her first Emmy for writing on SCTV in 1982.

Her second Emmy came 38 years later for playing Moira Rose on Schitt's Creek in the show's sixth and final season.

Schitt's Creek swept all seven major comedy categories at the 2020 Emmys and introduced O'Hara to a new generation of fans.

Her final Emmy nomination came in 2025 for guest work on HBO's The Last of Us.

Pedro Pascal, who worked with O'Hara on that series, wrote on Instagram: "Oh, genius to be near you. Eternally grateful. There is less light in my world."

Eugene Levy, who collaborated with O'Hara for 50 years from SCTV through Schitt's Creek, released a statement calling her both a cherished colleague and friend.

"From our beginnings on the Second City stage, to SCTV, to the movies we did with Chris Guest, to our six glorious years on Schitt's Creek, I cherished our working relationship, but most of all our friendship," Levy said.

O'Hara's death comes as 2026 has already seen shocking losses in the entertainment world.

Grateful Dead founding member Bob Weir died January 10 at 78 after a cancer battle.

Sanford and Son star Demond Wilson passed away January 31 at 79 from cancer complications.

The sudden nature of O'Hara's death hit particularly hard given she was still working right up until the end.

Just three months ago she looked thin but happy at a public event.

Culkin didn't write some lengthy Hollywood statement full of publicist-speak.

He wrote what he actually felt.

She maintained genuine relationships with her co-stars decades after the cameras stopped rolling.

The bond between the Home Alone stars endured through Culkin's difficult years following childhood fame and O'Hara's career renaissance with Schitt's Creek.

Their Walk of Fame embrace mirrored that iconic moment from the 1990 holiday classic when Kate McCallister is finally reunited with Kevin.

Except this time it wasn't acting.

It was a real mother figure celebrating her on-screen son's success against all odds.

Now Hollywood must reckon with the reality that Catherine O'Hara is gone far too soon.

Culkin's words echo what millions of fans feel about losing one of comedy's most brilliant talents at just 71.
