Joe Biden's 2020 basement campaign became the biggest punchline in modern politics.
Now Texas Senate candidate James Talarico just pulled the same disappearing act for eleven straight days.
Ken Paxton stood in San Antonio and demanded answers nobody in Talarico's campaign wanted to give.
Paxton Leads "Where Is Talarico" Chant at Trump Rally
Donald Trump flew into San Antonio Wednesday night to campaign for Ken Paxton.
Paxton did not waste the moment.
He stood in front of the Freeman Coliseum crowd and started a chant.
"Where is Talarico?"
Eleven days without a single Texas campaign stop.
That's how long Talarico has gone missing, and Paxton made sure every voter in that arena knew it.
Trump picked up the line and ran with it.
He mocked Talarico's absence from the stage.
He needled the Democrat's vegetarian diet and suggested it finally caught up with him.
Thousands of Texans stood in that arena chanting three words over and over, and not one of them needed Talarico there to explain himself for the moment to land.
Trump used it to go after Talarico on immigration, public safety, and education – the issues Paxton has built his entire campaign around.
He told the crowd flat out: Republicans can't afford to hand this seat to a candidate who won't even show up.
Campaign Blames the Flu as Early Voting Looms
Talarico's team had an answer ready.
Spokesman JT Ennis told Fox News Digital the candidate had worked through "more than 100 public events" before getting hit with the flu.
He said Talarico will be back on the trail this weekend.
Ennis then pivoted straight to attack mode.
He accused Paxton of answering to "billionaire megadonors and special interests" instead of Texas voters.
Here's what the flu excuse conveniently leaves out.
James Talarico is not some underdog clinging to relevance.
A Texas Southern University poll carried by Fox4 has him up 47 percent to 46 percent over Paxton, with early voting opening October 19.
He built that lead on a viral moment that turned him into a progressive fundraising machine overnight.
And now, at the exact moment he needs to close the deal with Texas voters, he's nowhere to be found.
MAGA Inc isn't taking chances either way.
The Trump-aligned super PAC already poured $10 million into Paxton's race, and Wednesday's rally was the clearest sign yet of why.
This Is the Biden Playbook All Over Again
Texans have seen this movie before, just with a different lead actor.
Joe Biden's campaign spent all of 2020 keeping him locked in his basement.
Terry McAuliffe let the real reason slip on live television: "He's fine in the basement. Two people see him a day: his two body people."
Chris Wallace called it "the damnedest thing I've ever seen."
Mike Huckabee had the better line.
A basement, he said, is "where you put all your cranky relatives… and keep 'em out of sight."
Talarico's campaign is running the same play with a flu claim standing in for a pandemic.
When a Democrat is ahead in the polls, the move isn't to fight for every last vote.
The move is to disappear, run out the clock, and let the opponent do all the talking.
That strategy worked for Biden in a presidential race drowning in free national media coverage.
It is a much bigger gamble in a Texas Senate race where Paxton can fill every empty microphone Talarico leaves behind – and Trump just proved he's happy to do exactly that.
Republicans know the only way to beat a frontrunner who's hiding is to make the hiding itself the story.
That's exactly what happened Wednesday night in San Antonio.
Chuck Schumer needs seats exactly like this one to have any shot at retaking the majority.
Republicans are holding a razor-thin Senate majority right now, and one empty podium in San Antonio could end up deciding who runs that chamber in January.
