James Talarico vanished from the Texas campaign trail for twelve straight days.
Ken Paxton's campaign turned that disappearing act into a full blown missing person search.
Now Ken Paxton is plastering Texas with a missing poster of his own.
Twelve Days of Silence Rocked the Texas Senate Race
The last time anyone saw James Talarico in person was a gas prices press conference back in Carrollton on Sept. 26.
Two days later he flew to New York City for a fundraiser.
By Sept. 29, Team Talarico was blaming it all on the flu.
Then nothing.
No rallies.
No town halls.
No cameras.
No Talarico.
For twelve days the Democrat running to replace a sitting Texas senator simply disappeared from public view.
President Trump noticed first.
"TalaFREAKo has been missing for 12 days!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.
"Now, after looking for him throughout all of Texas, and beyond, probably even weirder places than anyone would think possible, he put out a statement that he has the 'flu,'" Trump added.
Ken Paxton's campaign noticed too, demanding what spokeswoman Madison Cercy called a "simple request: proof of life."
Paxton posted his own missing poster of Talarico, captioned "LAST SEEN: 12 days ago."
"Texans everywhere are asking: where is James Talarico?" Paxton wrote, claiming the posters were popping up all over the state.
Days later he stood next to Trump at a San Antonio rally and led the crowd through a countdown before everyone chanted Talarico's name together.
James Talarico Resurfaces at Austin City Limits After Going Missing
Talarico resurfaced Friday, not at a hospital, not behind a podium, but strolling through the crowd at the Austin City Limits Music Festival.
His spokesman, JT Ennis, posted video of the stroll like nothing had happened.
"Hate to disappoint the conspiracy theorists, but James is still alive and meeting with voters at ACL today," Ennis wrote.
Democrats want that one line to settle everything.
It doesn't explain why the campaign stonewalled for twelve days while Paxton's team begged for proof of life.
It doesn't explain why the campaign now counts a Sept. 30 Zoom call as a public appearance just to shrink the missing stretch from twelve days down to nine.
And it doesn't explain how a candidate whose own campaign brags about 100 public events suddenly couldn't manage one more for nearly two weeks.
Talarico Commits to a Friendly CNN Audience While a Real Debate Stays Unscheduled
Talarico found enough energy to book a sit down town hall with CNN for Oct. 14.
He has not found enough energy to actually get on a debate stage with Paxton.
Trump told Talarico to "immediately report to a debate stage against Ken Paxton," calling the attorney general "ready, willing and able."
Talarico shot back that the "ball's in Paxton's court," but Texans are still waiting on an actual date, a venue, or anything beyond talk.
Analysis
This isn't the first time a Democrat has gone quiet right when voters needed answers the most.
Hillary Clinton's campaign spent days in September 2016 insisting she was fine, right up until video caught her buckling at a 9/11 memorial and her camp finally admitted she'd hidden pneumonia for days.
Talarico ran the same play – deny there's a story, stall until the cameras lose interest, resurface with a smile once the news cycle moves on.
And it's working, because he's still running neck and neck with Paxton in the polls despite going completely unaccountable for twelve days to the Texans he wants to send him to the United States Senate.
That should bother anyone who thinks a Senate candidate owes voters more than a festival selfie after disappearing without a straight answer.
