Democrat strategists are quietly cheering on the man his own father pardoned for gun and tax felonies.
That's where the party is right now.
Hunter Biden – convicted felon, foreign business dealmaker, the face of everything Republicans spent four years saying was wrong with the Biden family – is now, according to operatives who spoke to the Daily Mail, an "effective" Democratic messaging figure ahead of the 2026 midterms.
The Party With No One Else to Call
Hunter's former White House spokesman Andrew Bates spelled it out directly.
"It's helpful for the party because he breaks through in a unique way about the historic corruption in Trump's Washington," Bates told the Daily Mail, "on platforms that few Democrats go on."
Read that again. The man who pleaded guilty to nine counts of tax fraud – failing to pay $1.4 million to the IRS while spending lavishly on drugs, escorts, and luxury cars – is now the Democrat who "breaks through."
Gavin Newsom can't do it. Kamala Harris couldn't do it. The entire professional Democratic consulting class – the same people who lost the White House and both chambers of Congress in 2024 – apparently can't do it either. But Hunter Biden, posting from his phone seven years sober, calling himself the "MAGA whisperer," is somehow the guy they're counting on.
He's been on a tear since late May. Nearly 500 posts in three weeks, picking fights with Jake Tapper, pointing fingers at Jared Kushner's business deals and Eric Trump's wartime drone company, cracking jokes about his own past, and declaring that "the Epstein Elite Oligarch class" is keeping Americans at each other's throats for profit.
The audience loved it. Former Trump voters included.
What This Actually Tells You About Democrats
Here's the problem Democrat strategists don't want to talk about: Hunter Biden isn't a messaging asset. He's a confession.
Joe Biden promised the American people – repeatedly, explicitly, publicly – that he would never pardon his son. His own press secretary confirmed it as recently as November 8, 2024. Then, weeks before Hunter faced sentencing on nine tax counts and three felony gun charges, the outgoing president signed a full and unconditional pardon covering everything his son did from 2014 through 2024 – including his entire run on the Burisma board in Ukraine and his overseas work in China.
That pardon is the only reason Hunter Biden gets to post funny tweets instead of reporting to a federal facility.
Democrats now want to use him to talk about Trump family corruption. The man making those charges walks free only because his father used the most extraordinary power in the American presidency to rescue him from accountability – after lying to the country about it for years.
The Real 2026 Picture
Democrats don't have a message heading into the midterms, and they know it. Party insiders told NBC News their plan is to run a "corruption" narrative in every competitive race, hoping that anger at Trump's Washington translates into House pickups. Multiple Democratic officials admitted to the Washington Post they still can't unify around what they actually stand for.
So the strategy is Hunter Biden posting on X and a former White House flack calling it a breakthrough.
This is the party that controls the legacy media, Hollywood, and most of academia. They have Gavin Newsom auditioning for president every week, Pete Buttigieg waiting in the wings, and a dozen Senate Democrats positioning themselves as the future of the party.
And the best option they could find is the guy whose dad had to use a presidential pardon to keep him out of prison.
Hunter Biden isn't the Democrats' secret weapon. He's the tell. When a pardoned felon turned social media character is your sharpest anti-corruption voice heading into a midterm election, your party doesn't have a strategy problem. It has a substance problem.
Republicans should let him keep talking.
