Obama killed the moon program and told America to dream smaller.
Yesterday, Trump flew to Houston and did the opposite.
Now he's built something at Johnson Space Center that changes the next fifty years of the space race.
The Space Race Obama Forfeited
Let's go back to 2010.
Obama's White House didn't quietly trim NASA's budget.
They killed the Constellation program outright – a five-year, $9 billion effort to build new rockets and spacecraft designed to return Americans to the moon.
Gone.
Trump said it plainly at Johnson Space Center: under Obama, "we even lost our ability to send astronauts into orbit at all."
That wasn't rhetoric.
That was fact.
For years, American astronauts hitched rides to the International Space Station on Russian rockets – paying Moscow nearly $82 million per seat while Obama's team told NASA to dream about asteroids instead.
China, meanwhile, was building.
By mid-2025, Beijing's operational satellite fleet had crossed 1,060 satellites – hundreds of them dedicated to intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.
Russia was developing maneuverable robotic satellites and hidden systems designed to activate without warning, long after launch.
Obama looked at all of that and decided America should study climate change from orbit instead.
What Trump Built While Democrats Complained
Trump created the Space Force in his first term.
Democrats mocked it.
The late-night hosts had a field day.
Now Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is coordinating $25 billion in Golden Dome funding that includes space-based interceptors capable of neutralizing ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons, and drones before they reach American soil.
The Space Force's fiscal 2026 budget is approaching $40 billion – record funding for what the military now officially designates as a warfighting domain.
Chief of Space Operations Gen. B. Chance Saltzman put it directly: "The Space Force was created to do just that" – built to dominate the domain Hegseth says America must control.
On Friday, Trump awarded Congressional Space Medals of Honor to the four Artemis II astronauts – Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
The medals recognized four astronauts who redefined how far humans have traveled from home.
Then he signed an executive order creating the U.S. Space Academy.
West Point for space.
The new academy will train astronauts, engineers, warfighters, and entrepreneurs to advance American interests beyond the atmosphere – with NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman chairing the commission that will build it.
Why Beijing Should Be Worried
Space Force analysts aren't guessing about the threat anymore.
The service's own long-range assessment describes a future where the line between peacetime and conflict blurs into constant low-level electronic and cyber warfare in orbit.
China is projected to operate 21,000 satellites by 2040.
Russia is pursuing a nuclear anti-satellite weapon alongside what analysts call "asymmetric counterspace capabilities" – technology built to blind American military systems without triggering a full-scale war.
The Space Force is already deploying counterspace weapons to deter exactly that scenario.
Trump understands what his predecessor never did: space isn't a science project.
It's the highest military ground in human history.
Whoever controls orbit controls communications, GPS, missile targeting, drone networks, and battlefield intelligence for every conflict on Earth below.
The Artemis II astronauts traveled 252,756 miles beyond Earth on their loop around the moon – a distance no human had reached before.
He told the ISS crew by phone that "the moon will someday be thought of as a close location."
That's not a campaign line.
That's a strategic doctrine.
Obama scrapped Constellation and left America hitching rides from Moscow.
Trump just signed the order to close the gap he inherited.
