Democrats have bent over backwards to oppose the Trump agenda at nearly every turn.
But there are some bridges they’re learning it’s best not to cross.
And Democrats surprised Donald Trump with support for one of his plans that will change your life forever.
Trump declares war on Daylight Saving Time
The clock-changing ritual Americans have endured for generations may finally be coming to an end.
And it’s all because Donald Trump is taking a stand that has Democrats scrambling to get on board.
President Donald Trump declared that Daylight Saving Time should be abolished.
Trump pushed to end the practice, calling it “inconvenient” and “very costly” to Americans, sparking a rare moment of bipartisan agreement in the hyper-polarized capital.
In a surprising turn of events, Senate Democrats and Republicans are now racing to end the twice-yearly ritual that has disrupted American lives for over a century.
During a recent Senate Commerce Committee hearing, Chairman Ted Cruz (R-TX) acknowledged what millions of tired Americans have complained about for years.
“We find ourselves adjusting our clocks… springing forward and falling back in the fall. For many Americans, this biannual ritual is a minor inconvenience… But when we take a closer look at the implications of changing the clocks, its impact on our economy, our health and our everyday lives, we can see that this practice is more than an annoyance,” Cruz said.
The Texas Republican emphasized that while Daylight Saving Time was created to reduce energy consumption, the expected benefits never materialized.
Cruz noted that, unlike the early 1900s, today’s effects from sunrise and sunset timings are “de minimis” on energy consumption, effectively admitting the century-old experiment has failed.
Democrats admit Trump is right
In a rare display of agreement with Trump’s position, Democratic Senator Lisa Blunt-Rochester of Delaware conceded it was time for change.
“We need to stop the clock,” Blunt-Rochester admitted. “We know that changing the clock disrupts sleep, which can lead to negative health outcomes. Several studies have noted issues with mood disturbances increase hospital admissions, and even heart attacks and strokes.”
Her comments align perfectly with Trump’s assessment that the current system hurts Americans, suggesting Democrats can’t ignore the overwhelming evidence any longer.
Massachusetts neurology physician Dr. Karin Johnson testified at the hearing about serious health concerns associated with both changing time twice yearly and the permanence of Daylight Saving Time versus Standard Time.
The hearing included evidence that the abrupt shift disrupts people’s circadian rhythm and vascular system while causing dangerous sleep deprivation.
Lock the Clock movement founder Scott Yates revealed that the practice has a checkered past, especially during the 1970s energy crisis when the Nixon administration briefly made DST permanent.
Yates explained that Nixon signed the law in December 1973 while embroiled in Watergate, but Americans were so outraged by the change that it was quickly repealed.
“So you can imagine, the worst Monday of the year already is the one after the holiday break where you have to go back to school and everything — to have an extra hour of sleep robbed away right before that. You can understand why it was so unpopular and why it was repealed,” Yates said.
The Senate Commerce Committee also heard testimony about how southern states like Florida and Texas would be most negatively affected by permanent Daylight Saving Time, despite past attempts to implement such a solution.
Republicans lead the way on permanent solution
Cruz noted the historical bipartisan support for ending the time changes, including a bill from former Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) that successfully passed the Senate but stalled in the House.
Democrat Senator Edward Markey of Massachusetts even boasted about his decades-long work on this issue, which earned him the nickname “the Sun King.”
The committee also heard from the National Golf Course Owners Association about potential economic benefits from evening activities that require daylight hours.
However, witnesses warned that economic considerations shouldn’t outweigh the serious health impacts, particularly for those in southern states.
Trump’s position on ending this disruptive practice shows once again how his America First agenda prioritizes the health and well-being of everyday Americans over outdated government mandates.
Even Cruz couldn’t resist making a Watergate joke, suggesting, “So maybe — if we had more daylight, the Watergate break-in doesn’t happen… And history would be different.”
With Trump pushing for the change and both parties acknowledging the harm caused by clock-changing, Americans may finally see relief from this twice-yearly disruption that affects everything from their health to their productivity.
