Joe Biden spent four years telling Michigan he had their back.
Now his own party's governor just told Gavin Newsom the truth, for everyone to hear.
What Whitmer said next should make every Michigan Democrat furious.
The Fighter Jet Biden Forgot
Selfridge Air National Guard Base sits just outside Detroit. It's an economic engine worth hundreds of millions of dollars a year, and it keeps thousands of Michigan families employed.
For years, the base was dying a slow death.
Its aging A-10 Warthog fleet was heading for retirement, and without a replacement mission, Selfridge was staring at fewer jobs, diminished readiness, and eventually closure.
Whitmer spent years lobbying for a new mission.
She pressed Obama's administration.
She pressed Trump's first term.
She pressed Biden – the Democrat, her ally, her party's president – with everything she had.
Biden couldn't get it done.
Trump got it done in months.
In April 2025, Trump landed at Selfridge for his 100th day in office and announced 21 brand-new F-15EX Eagle II fighter jets – fresh off the production line – were coming to replace the A-10s.
Michigan Republican Rep. Matt Hall put it plainly: "We tried for years to get this done with Obama and Biden, and they failed to do anything."
Now Whitmer is saying the same thing, just with softer language, on Gavin Newsom's podcast.
"I got a fighter mission at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, and I tried to get that done under the Biden administration, couldn't get over the finish line, but I got it done with him," she told Newsom.
That sentence should haunt every Democrat who spent 2024 insisting Biden was the most pro-worker, pro-military president in a generation.
What Biden's Failure Actually Cost
The Selfridge delay wasn't a paperwork problem.
Every year Biden stalled, Michigan's military families lived with uncertainty about whether their base, their careers, their community would survive.
Biden held rallies in Detroit and promised to fight for the working people of Michigan.
The White House didn't mince words when this story broke.
President Trump rebuilt the readiness Biden let rot, a White House spokeswoman told Fox News Digital, calling Selfridge a crucial pillar of North American air defense that Biden's "weak policies" had left neglected.
That's not spin.
That's Whitmer's own admission, translated from Democrat-speak into plain English.
The Folder-Over-The-Face Problem
Whitmer is, or was, a serious 2028 presidential contender.
She gave the Democratic response to Trump's 2020 State of the Union.
Biden vetted her as a running mate.
She had the national profile and the biography Democrats needed.
Then Trump won Michigan again in 2024, and Whitmer chose to work with him – and it's costing her with her own party.
Democrats fumed when she visited the White House in April 2025.
They fumed harder when she stood next to Trump at Selfridge and called herself "really damn happy" about what they'd accomplished together.
She famously tried to hide her face with a folder during an Oval Office photo op, a moment that went viral because it captured the impossible position she'd put herself in.
By May 2026, the 2028 speculation had collapsed entirely.
Whitmer ruled out a presidential run.
The far-left of her party will never forgive her for saying out loud what everyone already knew: Trump delivers and Biden didn't.
Why Democrats Are Losing Michigan
They've spent years telling Michigan workers they're the party that fights for them.
They told autoworkers they'd protect their jobs.
They told military families they'd protect their bases.
Then a Republican president showed up on day 100, announced 21 new fighter jets, and hugged the Democratic governor on the tarmac.
A White House spokesperson didn't hold back either, telling Fox News Digital that Democrats like Whitmer had spent decades merely talking about manufacturing jobs while Trump is "actually delivering."
Michigan voted for Trump twice.
Whitmer knows why.
She just told Gavin Newsom exactly why, without realizing she'd handed Republicans a perfect campaign line for 2026 and beyond.
Trump delivers.
Biden promised.
That's the whole race.
