JD Vance Just Told America What Trump Said About 2028

Trump called Vance his "most likely" heir apparent just weeks ago.

Now Vance is on national television revealing exactly what Trump told him in private about 2028.

And the one thing he said about Trump's position makes the 2028 race look very different than Democrats hoped.

Vance Names His Timetable and Trump Weighs In

The 2026 midterms haven't happened yet, and Vance says that's the clock he's watching.

On CBS Sunday Morning, seated alongside Usha – who is expecting their fourth child – Vance told correspondent Robert Costa the family will make the 2028 decision together once the midterm results are in.

"Usha and I will absolutely sit down and talk about what comes next for our family," Vance said.

Costa pressed him on whether Trump is being coy – or quietly encouraging – about a Vance run in 2028.

Vance didn't hedge.

"It's not coy, or it's not positive or negative," Vance said. "It's just, he kind of talks about it like, 'What's gonna happen?' You know, 'How do we make sure that we're successful?'"

Then came the line that tells you everything.

"I have no doubt that the president of the United States is going to be very supportive of anything that I ultimately decide to do."

Vance acknowledged he and Trump haven't had a formal succession conversation.

"We really just haven't talked about what that thing will be."

Trump's public posture tells the rest of the story.

Just weeks ago, he told reporters that Vance is "most likely" his heir apparent – the furthest he'd gone in backing the vice president as his successor.

He's also floated a Vance-Rubio ticket, calling the two "very unbeatable" together.

Vance Has Won the Conservative Base Twice in a Row

Vance doesn't need Trump to hand him the crown.

The base already has.

At CPAC in March, Vance won the 2028 presidential straw poll with 53% of the vote – back-to-back years, putting him ahead of every non-Trump candidate in the poll's history.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio finished second at 35% – a real surge from the 3% he earned a year earlier – but Vance's lead at the grassroots level is not close.

Indiana Senator Jim Banks put it plainly: "I think it's inevitable at this point that Vance will be the nominee in 2028."

The MAGA machinery is already moving.

Following Charlie Kirk's death, Turning Point USA – the organization Kirk built into the most powerful conservative youth network in America – threw its institutional weight behind Vance.

"Last night simply reaffirmed that Turning Point's entire political machinery will be behind him if he decides to run," a Trump adviser told Fox News Digital. "It's another big get for the vice president and a warning shot to other potential candidates."

Democrats spent two years telling themselves the MAGA coalition would fracture the moment Trump couldn't run again.

They were wrong.

Vance spent nearly four years executing Trump's agenda without flinching, defended it on every front the media threw at him, and is now releasing a memoir about his Catholic faith while his pregnant wife sits beside him on national television.

That's not a man auditioning for the job.

That's a man who already has it – and is simply waiting for the paperwork to catch up.

The 2028 race isn't starting after the midterms.

It ended this morning on CBS Sunday Morning when JD Vance told 65 million Trump voters the president has his back.
