Letitia James spent years trying to seize Trump's buildings in a civil fraud case.
Now Governor Kathy Hochul just handed James a brand new case, investigating alleged rapists at Cornell.
But James had already picked a side on social media days before she ever took the case.
James Promised to Target Trump Before She Became Attorney General
Letitia James did not stumble into a reputation as a partisan prosecutor.
She built it on purpose, back in 2018, when she ran for New York attorney general on a promise to go after Donald Trump.
She won. She spent the next six years chasing him through civil court, finally landing a fraud judgment that a New York appeals court later tore apart.
Then the Department of Justice indicted James herself on mortgage fraud charges tied to a Virginia property.
That indictment did not survive.
Prosecutors went back to a new grand jury to try again – and the grand jury refused to hand up a fresh indictment, more than once.
Conservatives called it lawfare in reverse. James called it political retaliation.
Either way, the pattern was set. This is a woman who built a career on picking targets first and finding the legal theory second.
Now she has a new target, and the pattern is repeating in real time.
Letitia James Named Special Prosecutor in the Chi Phi Cornell 7 Case
The new case involves seven young men accused of gang raping a Cornell student at a Chi Phi fraternity house in 2024.
Tompkins County prosecutors already looked at the allegations once and declined to file charges, saying the evidence did not meet the bar under New York law.
That was not good enough for Hochul.
She pulled the local district attorney off the case and handed it to James as a special prosecutor, calling the original decision the "bare minimum."
Here is the problem.
On September 28, days before Hochul made that appointment, James posted on X that what the accuser endured was "horrific and unacceptable."
She told the alleged victim she was holding her "in my heart and in my prayers."
That is not neutral language from a prosecutor. That is a verdict, posted before the investigation even started.
Trump noticed immediately.
Asked about Hochul's pick, he did not hold back.
"Letitia James is a corrupt person," Trump said, adding that whoever she investigates "won't get a fair shake."
Defense attorneys Andrew Miltenberg and Teny Geragos, representing two of the accused, filed motions to remove James from the case entirely.
Geragos argued in court papers that the post alone proves James is "unquestionably biased."
James had not reviewed a single piece of evidence in the case when she wrote it.
James's response was to go on camera and promise a "fair" investigation, insisting politics "stops at the door" of her office.
That is the same door conservatives watched her walk through in 2018, promising the opposite.
From Trump's Fraud Case to Cornell James Repeats the Same Move
Here is what makes this more than a local court fight.
James is not some random prosecutor who happened to get assigned a hard case.
She is the same attorney general the Justice Department has repeatedly tried, and repeatedly failed, to indict for alleged mortgage fraud.
She is the same one who ran for office promising to use her badge against one specific political opponent.
And she is the same one who just told the public how this case should end before she ever opened the file.
That is not law enforcement.
That is activism wearing a prosecutor's badge.
Seven young men accused of a brutal crime are now at the mercy of someone who already decided they are guilty.
Due process exists so the state does not get to pick its conclusion first and build the case around it.
James has now done that twice in public, once against a sitting president and once against defendants who have not had a trial.
If her own defenders cannot explain why a prosecutor gets to publicly comfort one side of a case she will soon be running, they are not defending justice.
They are defending her.
