The Postmaster General told Congress on Wednesday that USPS would withhold ballots from any state that refused to hand over its voter lists.
Twenty-four hours later, an Obama judge in Boston made sure none of that ever happens before November.
Trump's order to verify who actually receives a mail ballot is dead – at least for the midterms – and you need to know what Democrats were protecting.
What Trump's Order Actually Did
Trump signed the executive order March 31 under the title "Ensuring Citizenship Verification and Integrity in Federal Elections."
The order directed the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration to compile state-by-state lists of verified U.S. citizens eligible to vote.
It directed the Postal Service to deliver mail-in ballots only to voters who appeared on those verified lists.
It directed the attorney general to prioritize prosecuting anyone who sent ballots to ineligible voters.
That's the entire threat Democrats rushed five lawsuits to stop.
Twenty-three states and Washington, D.C. – every one of them Democrat-controlled – filed suit in Boston, a venue they selected specifically because they knew judges there would be friendly.
Within 24 hours of Steiner's testimony, Judge Indira Talwani – a Barack Obama appointee – shut the entire operation down.
The Pattern Democrats Are Using to Win Without Winning Elections
This isn't one rogue judge having a bad day.
During Trump's second term alone, Democrat-appointed judges have blocked his executive orders 169 times.
Compare that to 12 during Obama's entire presidency and 75 during Trump's first term.
In the early months of this term, Obama appointees alone accounted for 21 of the judges ruling against Trump's policies – and the pattern is always the same.
Democratic attorneys general file in friendly venues, draw Obama or Biden appointees, and get injunctions before Trump's policies can take effect.
Talwani's ruling Thursday was the third court order in a single week striking down Trump's election integrity efforts.
On Monday, a judge blocked the administration's voter-screening database.
On Wednesday, another judge permanently blocked the proof-of-citizenship requirement for voter registration.
On Thursday, Talwani blocked the mail-ballot verification system.
Every ruling. Every time. Democrat appointees.
Stephen Miller said the quiet part out loud on X after the ruling: "I hope the Chief Justice understands the path these rogue judges have charted for the judiciary."
The administration has confirmed it will appeal.
What Democrats Are Actually Protecting
If verifying that mail ballots go to citizens is unconstitutional overreach, what exactly are Democrats afraid would happen if you verified it?
Trump signed the order because the SAVE database – the same federal system used to verify immigrants' eligibility for government benefits – has repeatedly flagged potential noncitizens on voter rolls.
Democrats called that a reason to stop the verification.
Trump called it a reason to fix it.
An Obama judge sided with the Democrats.
Massachusetts already spent $3 million on mail ballot envelopes that wouldn't comply with Trump's new barcode tracking requirements.
Maine and Rhode Island each spent over $50,000.
Talwani cited those expenditures in her ruling as evidence of irreparable harm to the states.
Democrats spent millions pre-buying envelopes that can't be tracked – and then used that spending as legal ammunition to stop tracking.
The SAVE America Act Is the Only Path Left
The courts have now told Trump twice – once in 2025 and once this week – that he cannot use executive orders to reform election administration.
The Constitution gives that power to Congress and the states, not the president.
That's actually correct as a legal matter.
Which means the only way to get verification into federal elections before November is the SAVE America Act – Trump's legislative push for proof-of-citizenship requirements.
The bill passed the House.
It is stalled in the Senate, blocked by Democrats and the legislative filibuster.
Trump made the stakes clear this week when he refused to sign a bipartisan housing bill – a bill his own party supported – until Congress moved on the SAVE Act first.
They know which party benefits from unverified mail ballots flooding swing states.
And they just used a single Obama appointee in Boston to make sure nothing changes before the midterms.
